Celebrating our family past can provide us with a healthy sense of self-identity, of knowing who we are.

 The Importance of Family Heritage 

Having a healthy sense of knowing who we are is a foundational building block to life. It helps us grow our confidence as people and as families. 

The ever increasing communication gap between generations and enjoying the present moment tends to by-pass the significant people and events that have shaped our lives. This is a pity because while we choose our own directions in life, our present choices and interests are always influenced and connected to happenings in the past. To ignore our heritage is a little like ignoring an arm or a leg — it’s to ignore an important part of who we are. This is why the Roman philosopher Cicero said, “Unless we know from whence we came we remain forever a child.” 

While the cold facts and detail of history can sometimes take on a boring tone, the power of a good story can bring the past and the experiences of our ancestors into the present in a positive, dynamic way. This magic happens when we recognise that our family has a past story. When we convey it to the children of the present generation we become a channel through which the human aspects of yesterday’s story strike a heartfelt chord and regardless of the years that separate us, yesterday’s story tends to become part of our own story. 

While circumstances are different, we recognise that the joys and struggles that our ancestors knew are so common and familiar to all people that in some ways we can identify them as our own. Every parent and grandparent needs to be a storyteller. This is when we take time to pass on the stories of who we are. This is exactly what this digital record and its pictures are all about. As we mix the family’s past journey with our own memories and experiences we preserve and pass on something of who we are to the next generation. 

Just as we know 25 December as Christmas Day, it would be to our advantage and the benefit of our family to choose to set aside a time every year to recall our family heritage, our Cornish roots, pioneers and forefathers. The family will not only benefit from knowing who they are and where they come from but also from discovering another way of life, the customs, songs, struggles and visions of their unseen family through the ages.
